Legacy cares for the widows and families of Australia's incapacitated and deceased veterans.
Over 103,000 Australian servicemen and women have been killed during their service to Australia, and many thousands more have since succumbed to their injuries. Each successive generation of Australian veterans has felt compelled to assist their dead comrades’ families after they witnessed the suffering and hardship faced by widows and children. Legacy is the volunteer organisation founded on this promise to care for the families of the fallen, and is named for the way its volunteers accept responsibility for the services provided.
Legacy’s work continues to be relevant, and services have been expanded to include the family of any deceased veteran. Australia's increased use of its defence force on military, humanitarian and peacekeeping duties has led to a new generation of veterans, and many deaths. In the last 15 years, over 50,000 Australians have served in places such as Somalia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, East Timor, and lraq. These deployments are always dangerous, and families need to be confident that they will be cared for should the unthinkable happen.
We do this in the name of a grateful nation and as a service to the community.
